Description
AIRCRAFT DEPARTED KABUL, AFGHANISTAN (OAKB) DESTINED FOR KANDAHAR, AFGHANISTAN (OAKN) AND DIVERTED TO BAGRAM, AFGHANISTAN (OAIX) DUE TO SMOKE IN COCKPIT FROM THE #1 COMMUNICATIONS UNIT (COM). REPORTED PROBLEM WITH THE #1 COM PRIOR TO THE FLIGHT AND THAT MAINTENANCE HAD ADDRESSED THE ISSUE BEFORE DEPARTURE. SUBSEQUENT TO THE REPAIR ANOTHER OCCURRENCE OF SMOKE FROM THE #1 COM HEAD WAS TRACED TO A WIRE THAT HAD CHAFFED AND INTERMITTENTLY SHORTED TO GROUND AT A BULKHEAD PASS THROUGH. THE WIRE WAS REPAIRED AND AIRCRAFT RETURNED TO SERVICE. THIS FORM WILL BE AMENDED IF/WHEN MORE INFORMATION BECOMES AVAILABLE. AMENDMENT #1 COMPLETED TO ADD PILOT TIMES AND TRAINING AND REMOVE NAMES AS PILOT ACTIONS DID NOT CONTRIBUTE TO THE INCIDENT.
