About the SCHLEICHER ASW-27

The SCHLEICHER ASW-27 is a high-performance single-seat glider that has etched its place in the annals of soaring history. Designed by the renowned German engineer Gerhard Waibel, this glider was introduced in 1995 by Alexander Schleicher GmbH & Co, one of the oldest and most prestigious glider manufacturers in the world. The ASW-27 was created to compete in the FAI's Standard Class category, which imposes restrictions on wingspan and certain high-tech enhancements to ensure a level playing field in competitions.

The primary motivation for the production of the ASW-27 was to leverage advancements in aerodynamics and materials to create a superior soaring machine. Using advanced composite materials, the ASW-27 achieved a remarkable balance between light weight and structural strength. Its 15-meter wingspan, featuring sophisticated winglets, offers optimal lift-to-drag ratio, making it highly efficient in both thermal and cross-country soaring.

Key Features and Capabilities

Over the years, the ASW-27 proved to be a formidable competitor in national and international gliding competitions. Its design emphasizes performance and handling, making it popular among serious competition pilots. The cockpit was designed with ergonomics in mind, providing comfort during long flights. Its handling qualities are described as smooth and responsive, which is highly appreciated by pilots who need precise control during competitions.

The niche the ASW-27 serves is quite specialized; it is tailored for pilots who are deeply invested in competitive soaring and high-performance gliding. Its strengths lie in its exceptional performance metrics and its ability to exploit weak thermals effectively, making it a favorite in environments where soaring conditions can be marginal.

Market Position and Use Cases

In summary, the SCHLEICHER ASW-27 is not just an aircraft but a finely tuned tool designed to push the boundaries of what is possible in the sport of gliding. Its production history reflects a commitment to aerodynamic excellence and its role in the competitive gliding community remains influential.

Description
As the pilot was attempting to return to the airport after a soaring flight, he could not visually obtain it. The pilot then attempted to use GPS data to locate the airport, but another airport was mistakenly selected in the GPS unit. As the altitude of the glider continued to decay, the pilot elected to perform a forced landing to a field. Upon touching down in the field, the glider encountered a ditch, and came to rest upright.
