About the AIRCRAFT MFG & DEVELOPMENT CO CH 2000

The CH 2000 is a general aviation aircraft developed by Aircraft Manufacturing & Development Co. (AMFDC), targeting the market segment for small, affordable trainers and personal aircraft. Originating from the Zenith Aircraft Company's line of light, experimental aircraft, the CH 2000 was designed by celebrated aeronautical engineer Chris Heintz. Initially conceptualized as the CH 200 Zenair in the 1980s, it was an evolution meant to offer better performance, ease of handling, and enhanced safety for pilot training and private use.

Production of the CH 2000 began in the early 1990s after AMFDC obtained the design rights. The aircraft featured a low-wing, all-metal structure which contributed to its robustness and reliability. With its durable design and forgiving flight characteristics, the CH 2000 became a popular choice among flight schools and amateur pilots alike. The aircraft is powered by a Lycoming O-235 engine, which provides sufficient power while being economical to operate. It can typically cruise at speeds around 110 knots with a maximum range of approximately 600 nautical miles, making it suitable for both training and leisurely cross-country flights.

Key Features and Capabilities

One of the key motivations behind the CH 2000's production was to provide an affordable and reliable training aircraft in a market dominated by older models like the Cessna 150/152. Its simplicity and lower operational costs were significant selling points, making flight training more accessible. Additionally, the aircraft’s cockpit was designed with versatility in mind, accommodating advanced avionics and instrumentation, which added to its appeal for schools looking to train pilots on more modern equipment.

The niche the CH 2000 serves is clear: it bridges the gap between classic training aircraft and more modern, sophisticated trainers. Its benefits include economical operation, ease of maintenance, and a pragmatic design that supports both novice pilots’ learning needs and more experienced aviators seeking a reliable personal aircraft.

Accident and Incident Reports

June 20, 2018 - Newburyport, Massachusetts

Damage Level
Substantial
Description
The private pilot reported that, after a personal, cross-country flight, he entered the traffic pattern at the destination airport and noted a 20° left crosswind between 9 and 11 knots. The final approach was stable, but after crossing the threshold, the airplane descended and drifted left over grass adjacent to the runway. Because the airplane was not over the runway, the pilot chose to conduct a go-around and added full power, but the left main landing gear struck the grass next to the runway. The airplane did not climb and continued drifting left. The pilot retracted the flaps in an attempt to gain altitude; however, the airplane still did not climb, and the stall warning horn activated. He pushed the yoke forward to avoid a stall, and the airplane touched down on the grass and then impacted trees, which resulted in substantial damage to the wings and fuselage. The pilot reported that there were no mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that contributed to the accident. A stand of trees was located left of the runway. It is possible that the trees blocked the crosswind when the airplane descended below treetop level and that the pilot did not adequately compensate for the existing winds during the final approach and landing flare.
