About the CESSNA 172R

The Cessna 172R, a variant of the highly popular Cessna 172 Skyhawk series, occupies a significant place in the annals of general aviation. Introduced by the Cessna Aircraft Company in 1996, the Cessna 172R offered several updates over its predecessors, aiming to improve comfort, performance, and reliability. The motivations behind the production of the Cessna 172R included the need to modernize the fleet with contemporary avionics, more powerful engines, and improved aerodynamics to meet changing pilot expectations and regulatory requirements. As the aviation industry evolved, these updates helped keep the Cessna 172 series competitive in the training and personal aviation markets. The 172R introduced a 160-horsepower Lycoming IO-360-L2A fuel-injected engine, which offered improved fuel efficiency and reliability over the carbureted engines used in earlier models. This variant also featured a redesigned interior, providing pilots and passengers with enhanced comfort. The interior upgrades included new seating configurations and improved soundproofing, making the aircraft quieter and more suitable for longer flights. Another notable feature of the Cessna 172R was the incorporation of modern avionics. The panel included advanced navigation and communication systems, which not only increased safety but also made the aircraft more appealing for flight schools, where the demand for training on contemporary equipment was growing. The 172R also featured updated aerodynamics, including a revised cowling design that contributed to better cooling and reduced drag, enhancing the aircraftโ€™s overall efficiency and performance. Serving primarily as a training aircraft, the Cessna 172R found a niche in flight schools worldwide. Its reputation for reliability, coupled with the ease of handling and forgiving flight characteristics, made it a preferred choice for new pilots. Additionally, private pilots and aviation enthusiasts favored the 172R for personal use due to its versatility and reasonable operating costs. In summary, the Cessna 172R represents a thoughtful evolution of the iconic Skyhawk series. Its updates in engine performance, interior comfort, and avionics ensured that it remained a competitive and beloved aircraft in the general aviation community.

Accident and Incident Reports

October 07, 2020 - COLUMBUS, Mississippi

Damage Level
Substantial
Description
THE PILOT STATED: AFTER TURNING A LEFT BASE FOR A TOUCH AND GO ON 36 I HEARD A CALL FROM ANOTHER PILOT TRYING TO GET A VISUAL ON ME, HE HAD HEARD MY CALL ON DOWNWIND. I REPORTED LEFT BASE 36 TOUCH AND GO. HE RESPONDED THAT HE HAD A VISUAL. I PROCEEDED TO MAKE MY TURN TO FINAL. I MADE A STANDARD LANDING WHICH WAS WHAT I WAS WORKING ON. AFTER LANDING, ROLLED DOWN THE RUNWAY AND STARTED TO PREPARE FOR ANOTHER TAKEOFF. I RAISED THE FLAPS, MADE SURE I WAS ON CENTER LINE, FULL POWER, RIGHT RUDDER. EVERYTHING WAS FINE. RIGHT BEFORE I REACHED 55 TAKEOFF SPEED THE PLANE MADE A HARD 45 DEGREE TURN TO THE LEFT. I TRIED TO PUT EVEN MORE RIGHT RUDDER BUT IT WOULDN'T RESPOND. WHEN I REALIZED I WAS NOT GOING TO BE ABLE TO KEEP THE PLANE ON THE RUNWAY I PULLED POWER TO IDLE AND TRIED TO STEER BUT NOT USE ANY BRAKES BECAUSE I THOUGHT I WOULD LOSE EVEN MORE CONTROL. I ROLLED OVER A TAXIWAY SIGN WHICH CAUSED THE PLANE TO COME DOWN ON ITS NOSE AND SKID TO A STOP. I SECURED FUEL AND ELECTRONICS, MAGS, REMOVED KEY AND EXITED THE PLANE. AS PEOPLE STARTED TO GATHER AROUND TO MAKE SURE I WAS ALRIGHT AND WHAT HAD HAPPENED I FOUND OUT SOME HAD WITNESSED THE INCIDENT. THE WEATHER WAS PERFECT. THIS IS HONEST AND ACCURATE TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE. THE AIRCRAFT CAME TO REST OFF THE EDGE OF RUNWAY 36. THE AIRPORT MANAGER REQUESTED AUTHORIZATION TO MOVE THE AIRCRAFT FOR SAFETY REASONS FOR INCOMING AIRCRAFT. FAA REQUESTED THE AIRPORT MANAGER TO TAKE SEVERAL POINT AROUND THE AIRCRAFT, THE DAMAGED AREA OF THE AIRCRAFT, THE INSTRUMENT PANEL OF THE AIRCRAFT, AND ANY IDENTIFYING MARKS ALONG THE PATH OF THE AIRCRAFT BEFORE IT CAME TO REST. THE AIRPORT MANAGER FILLED THIS REQUEST AND EMAILED THEM TO FAA JACKSON FSDO. THE AIRCRAFT WAS RELOCATED TO THE NORTH RAMP AT UBS. THE AIRCRAFT RECEIVED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE NOSE GEAR AND FIREWALL OF THE AIRCRAFT. UPON EXAMINATION OF THE LANDING GEAR AND BRAKES THERE WERE NO SIGNS OF MECHANICAL MALFUNCTIONS OR ANOMALIES. THE BRAKES DID NOT APPEAR FROZEN OR STUCK AND THE WHEELS MOVED FREELY. THE FLIGHT CONTROLS HAD CONTINUITY.

October 17, 2020 - Columbus, Mississippi
