About the PIPER PA-22-135

The Piper PA-22-135, also known as the Piper Tri-Pacer, is a popular general aviation aircraft that was produced by the Piper Aircraft Corporation. The production of the PA-22-135 began in 1951, and it quickly gained a reputation for being a reliable and versatile aircraft, suitable for both recreational flying and flight training. The PA-22-135 is a member of the Tri-Pacer family, which includes several other variants with different engine configurations and performance characteristics. However, the PA-22-135 variant is distinguished by its Lycoming O-290-D2 engine, which produces 135 horsepower. This engine provides a good balance between performance and efficiency, making the PA-22-135 an attractive option for private pilots and flying clubs. The Tri-Pacer is a high-wing, four-seat aircraft with a nosewheel (tricycle) landing gear configuration, which was a relatively novel feature at the time of its introduction. Prior to the Tri-Pacer, most light aircraft were equipped with tailwheel (conventional) landing gear, which required more skill to handle, especially during takeoff and landing. The introduction of the tricycle gear made the PA-22-135 easier to operate, particularly for less experienced pilots. The cabin of the PA-22-135 is known for being relatively roomy and comfortable for its class, with adequate space for four occupants and their luggage. The aircraft also features control yokes mounted on the panel rather than a central control stick, which was another modern and pilot-friendly design choice. Over the years, the Piper PA-22-135 has been praised for its durability and docile handling characteristics. It remains a popular choice among aviation enthusiasts, with many examples still flying today, often lovingly restored and maintained by their owners. The Tri-Pacer's blend of practicality, ease of use, and distinctive appearance has ensured its enduring legacy in the world of general aviation.
