About the PIPER PA-28-151

The Piper PA-28-151 Cherokee Warrior is part of the PA-28 series, manufactured by Piper Aircraft, which has become synonymous with reliable and versatile general aviation aircraft. The PA-28 series began in the early 1960s with the introduction of the Cherokee 140, designed to be an entry-level airplane that was easy to fly and affordable for the general aviation market. This lineage of light aircraft includes numerous models differentiated by various powerplants and configurations, to meet a wide range of pilot needs and preferences.

The PA-28-151, commonly known as the Cherokee Warrior, was first introduced in 1974 as an upgrade and replacement for the PA-28-140 Cherokee Cruiser. The '151' designation refers to the 151 horsepower Lycoming O-320-E3D engine that powers the aircraft. This model featured a lengthened wing span (compared to its predecessor) and an increased gross weight, which enhanced the aircraft's overall performance and handling characteristics.

Key Features and Capabilities

The motivation behind the production of the PA-28-151 was to provide a more powerful and capable flying experience within the PA-28 line. This model aimed to strike a balance between performance, fuel efficiency, and affordability, making it an attractive option for private pilots and flight schools. With a cruising speed of around 120 knots and a range of approximately 580 nautical miles, the Warrior is well-suited for both training and cross-country flights.

The niche that the PA-28-151 Cherokee Warrior serves is primarily in the realms of pilot training and personal transportation. Flight schools favor the Warrior for its docile handling characteristics, robust construction, and relatively low operating costs. For individual owners, it provides a reliable and comfortable means of traveling moderate distances.

Market Position and Use Cases

One of the primary benefits of the PA-28-151 is its simplicity and ease of maintenance. The aircraft is designed with straightforward systems and a durable airframe, which translates to lower maintenance costs and increased reliability. The roomy cabin and easy entry/exit make it an appealing choice for a wide range of pilots, from students to experienced aviators looking for a dependable aircraft for leisurely flights.

Accident and Incident Reports

April 27, 2020 - LONGMONT, Colorado

Damage Level
Substantial
Description
THE PILOT WAS RETURNING TO ROCKY MOUNTAIN METROPOLITAN AIRPORT (KBJC) IN BROOMFIELD, CO; FROM PERFORMING A TIME BUILDING FLIGHT. WHILE IN THE PATTERN AT KBJC THE PILOT OBSERVED THAT HE WOULD BE LANDING WITH A CROSSWIND GREATER THAN WHAT HE WAS COMFORTABLE WITH. THE PILOT AMENDED HIS CLEARANCE, DEPARTED THE PATTERN, AND FLEW NORTH TO VANCE BRAND AIRPORT, (LMO) IN LONGMONT, CO. THE PILOT OBTAINED WEATHER INFORMATION FROM THE LMO AWOS-3 WITH REPORTS OF CALM WINDS. ONCE IN THE PATTERN FOR LMO RUNWAY 11, THE PILOT NOTED THAT THE WINDS WERE OUT OF THE SOUTH. THE PILOT REPORT THAT RIGHT BEFORE TOUCHDOWN ON RUNWAY 11 A GUST OF WIND TURNED THE NOSE OF THE AIRCRAFT TO THE LEFT. THE PILOT ADDED POWER BUT DID NOT COMPENSATE WITH RUDDER. THE LACK OF COMPENSATION INCREASED THE TURN TO THE LEFT. THE PILOT STATED THAT HE PANICKED AND TRIED TO INITIATE A GO AROUND. AS THE AIRCRAFT BECAME AIRBORNE, THE LEFT MAIN GEAR AND LEFT HORIZONTAL STABILIZER CONTACTED A TAXIWAY SIGN. THE AIRCRAFT CAME TO REST IN THE GRASS NEXT TO THE RUNWAY. SUBSEQUENT INSPECTION REVEALED THAT THE CONTACT TO THE LEFT MAIN STRUT CAUSED DAMAGE TO THE LEFT WING MAIN SPAR.

April 27, 2020 - Longmont, Colorado

Damage Level
Substantial
Description
The pilot checked the weather at his planned destination airport during the return leg of a cross-county flight. The wind speed was higher than his personal minimums, so he diverted to a nearby airport with reported calm wind. He entered the pattern for runway 11 and noticed that the wind was from the south. Prior to touchdown, the wind decreased and the airplane's nose tracked to the left. The pilot added power for a go-around but did not compensate with enough right rudder which aggravated the airplane's misalignment. The airplane touched down and exited the side of the runway. The airplane's left wing struck a taxiway sign resulting in substantial damage. The pilot reported no mechanical malfunctions with the airplane that could have contributed to the accident.
