About the CESSNA TU206G

The Cessna TU206G is a robust and versatile member of the Cessna 206 family, part of the broader Cessna 205/206/207 series. Known for their high-wing design and powerful performance, these aircraft have carved out a special niche in general aviation for both personal and commercial use. The TU206G, in particular, is a turbocharged variant, providing enhanced capabilities that make it a standout choice for various demanding roles including aerial photography, skydiving, and bush flying.

The development of the Cessna 206 series began in the early 1960s, with the model initially aimed at replacing the Cessna 210. The aircraft was designed to meet the needs of pilots who required a dependable and capable utility aircraft that could operate under a wide range of conditions. Introduced in the late 1970s, the TU206G's turbocharged engine allowed it to perform exceptionally well at high altitudes and in hot climates, where non-turbocharged engines could experience performance degradation.

Key Features and Capabilities

Production of the Cessna TU206G was driven by the need for a versatile aircraft that could handle the rugged demands of remote airfields and unprepared surfaces. Its large, double cargo doors and sturdy construction made it an ideal choice for transporting bulky freight, medical supplies, and passengers to remote locations. The TU206G's adaptability is further highlighted by its use in skydiving operations, where its ability to climb quickly and efficiently is highly valued.

The Cessna TU206G also found favor with law enforcement and search and rescue organizations, thanks to its high payload capacity and reliable performance. The aircraft's spacious cabin can be modified to carry a variety of equipment, making it a highly adaptable platform for surveillance and emergency missions.

Market Position and Use Cases

One of the primary benefits of the TU206G is its reliability and ease of maintenance. Cessna aircraft are renowned for their durability and the availability of parts, making them a popular choice among operators worldwide. The turbocharged engine of the TU206G offers better performance in challenging environments, ensuring that this aircraft remains a preferred choice for operators who need an aircraft that can meet a wide range of operational demands.

Accident and Incident Reports

June 11, 2013 - NANWALEK, Alaska

Damage Level
None
Description
PILOT FLEW TO SECOND LAKE NEAR NANWALEK AK INTENDING ON LANDING AND THEN BEACHING ON THE WEST SHORE. ACCORDING TO THE PILOT, THE WATER ALONG THE SHORE LINE IS VERY CLEAR AND THE BOTTOM IS VISIBLE. AFTER A COUPLE OF TOUCH AND GO'S HE LANDED ON THE LAKE AND DID A SLOW IDLE TAXI TO THE BEACH. ABOUT 50 OR MORE FEET FROM THE BEACH HE TURNED THE ENGINE OFF AND COASTED THE REMAINING DISTANCE. HE THEN TURNED THE FLOAT PLANE AROUND AND PUT IT'S STERNS ON THE BEACH. HE REPORTEDLY CHECKED THE FLOAT COMPARTMENTS AT THE STEP AND NOTICED WHAT HE REPORTED AS MINIMAL WATER IN THE LEFT FLOAT, HE CLOSED THE FLOAT COMPARTMENTS AND THEN CLIMBED IN AND AFTER ENGINE START BEGAN TO IDLE TAXI AWAY FROM THE BEACH. IT TOOK A FEW MINUTES TO TAXI, AT IDLE, ABOUT 700 TO 1000 FEET AWAY FROM THE BEACH AT WHICH POINT HE FELT HE WAS FAR ENOUGH AWAY FROM THE BEACH FOR NOISE ABATEMENT AND APPROPRIATE TO STEP TAXI TO THE OPPOSITE END OF THE LAKE. AT THIS TIME, HE APPLIED FULL POWER WITH THE YOKE FULLY AFT. THE AIRPLANES PITCH ATTITUDE NEVER CHANGED (FROM IDLE TAXI, TO HUMP/PLOW, TO STEP) IT REMAINED IN THE IDLE TAXI/DISPLACEMENT ATTITUDE. HE REPORTEDLY KNEW SOMETHING WAS WRONG SO, HE PULLED POWER TO IDLE AND THEN LOOKED OUT HIS LEFT WINDOW AT THE LEFT FLOAT AND NOTICED WATER FLOWING OVER THE TOP OF THE FLOAT. THE SHORELINE TO HIS RIGHT WAS ONLY A FEW HUNDRED FEET AWAY SO, HE TURNED RIGHT AND TRIED TO MAKE IT TO SHALLOWER WATER AND SHORELINE. THE LEFT FLOAT THEN IMMEDIATELY WENT FURTHER UNDER, MORE SO AT THE BOW. HE BELIEVED AT THAT POINT HE PULLED THE MIXTURE TO IDLE CUT OFF, AND THE FRONT OF THE AIRPLANE WENT IN NOSE FIRST AND THE BOW SEEMED TO HIT BOTTOM BECAUSE IT PAUSED AND STOOD STRAIGHT UP (NOSE UNDER, TAIL UP/OUT) LONG ENOUGH FOR HIM TO EGRESS AND MAKE IT TO THE SHORE LINE BEFORE IT FLIPPED COMPLETELY UPSIDE DOWN.
