About the MOONEY M20R

The Mooney M20R, also known as the Ovation, is a noteworthy model in the series of M20 aircraft produced by the Mooney International Corporation, a prominent name in general aviation. The Mooney M20 series first took to the skies in the early 1950s, initially aimed at providing a high-performance, single-engine, four-seater aircraft that balanced speed, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. The M20R, specifically, was introduced in the 1990s as an evolution of the M20 line, catering to aviation enthusiasts and private pilots who sought a sophisticated yet dependable traveling solution.

One of the main motivations behind the production of the M20R Ovation was to offer an advanced version of the M20 that could compete in an increasingly sophisticated market. The M20R incorporated modern avionics, an improved powerplant, and updated aerodynamics. It was powered by a Continental IO-550-G engine, which produced a robust 280 horsepower, enabling the aircraft to achieve notable performance metrics including a cruise speed of around 190 knots and a range of over 1,100 nautical miles.

Key Features and Capabilities

The M20R Ovation's niche is defined by its blend of speed, fuel efficiency, and luxury, making it popular among owner-pilots who value these characteristics. The aircraft featured a sleek, aerodynamically efficient design with retractable landing gear, a low-drag profile, and attention to weight reduction, all contributing to its impressive speed and range. Additionally, the M20R's cabin was crafted to ensure comfort, with ergonomic seating and an array of advanced avionics that enhanced navigation and flight safety—a key benefit for long cross-country trips.

Throughout its production run, the M20R Ovation garnered a positive reputation for its reliability, performance, and economical operation. It remains a significant model in the legacy of Mooney aircraft, embodying the company's commitment to delivering high-performance, efficient, and luxurious general aviation aircraft.

Accident and Incident Reports

April 16, 2018 - SAN ANTONIO, Texas

Damage Level
Substantial
Description
ON APRIL 16, 2018 AT APPROXIMATELY 1420 LOCAL, MOONEY N6868, REGISTERED TO ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^, LANDED ON RUNWAY 30 WHERE IT RAN OUT OF RUNWAY AND ROLLED OFF THE END AT TWIN OAKS AIRPORT (T94). THE AIRCRAFT CAME TO REST ON HEIMER ROAD, A RESIDENTIAL ROAD ON THE DEPARTURE END OF RUNWAY 30. THE FLIGHT ORIGINATED FROM ANGELINA COUNTY AIRPORT (KLFK) THE AIRCRAFT EXPERIENCED DAMAGE TO THE WINGS AND SPAR, NOSEWHEEL ASSEMBLY, FUEL TANKS, RUDDER AND VERTICAL STABILIZER, PROPELLER AND ENGINE. THERE WERE NO INJURIES TO THE TWO SOULS ON BOARD. THE REPORTED WEATHER FOR SAN ANTONIO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (KSAT), THE NEAREST REPORTING AIRPORT, CALLED FOR WINDS FROM 160 AT 17 GUSTING TO 24. CALCULATIONS FROM THESE REPORTED WINDS SHOW THAT AN AIRCRAFT LANDING ON RUNWAY 30 WOULD EXPERIENCE TAILWINDS FROM 13-19 KNOTS AND RIGHT CROSSWINDS FROM 11-16 KNOTS. ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ STATED IN HIS INTERVIEW THAT HE PURPOSELY LANDED ON RUNWAY 30 BECAUSE IT IS STANDARD PRACTICE TO LAND ON RUNWAY 30 WITH ITS UPSLOPE, EVEN WITH LIGHT TAILWINDS, THAN TO LAND ON RUNWAY 12 WITH ITS DOWNSLOPE. FAA CHART SUPPLEMENT DATA DOES NOT SHOW ANY SLOPE INFORMATION FOR T94, BUT AIRNAV SHOWS A GRADIENT OF 1.9%. IT WAS DISCOVERED DURING THE ON-SITE INVESTIGATION THAT THE RUNWAY DID INDEED HAVE A SLOPE, HOWEVER IT IS UNDETERMINED IF IT IS 1.9%. ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ ALSO STATED THAT HIS CUTOFF POINT WAS 10 KNOTS OF TAILWIND. AT THAT POINT, HE WOULD NORMALLY CHOOSE TO LAND ON RUNWAY 12. ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ MENTIONED HE CALCULATED THE TAILWIND AT 10 KNOTS AND THAT THE GROUND ROLL WOULD REQUIRE THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF THE RUNWAY, APPROXIMATELY 2225'.

April 16, 2018 - San Antonio, Texas

Damage Level
Substantial
Description
According to the pilot, the airplane encountered a tailwind gust during landing. He reported that he frequented the airport and that it was common practice to land with a tailwind because of the preferred up-sloping runway. He asserted that he underestimated the significance of the wind conditions and that, when the airplane touched down, it was too late to abort the landing. The ground speed was too fast, and the airplane exited the departure end of the runway and collided with an embankment. The airplane sustained substantial damage to the left wing. The METAR at the nearest airport, 2 nautical miles from the accident site, reported that, about the time of the accident, the wind was from 160° at 17 knots, gusting to 24 knots. The pilot landed on runway 30. The pilot reported that there were no mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.
