About the NICKLE C R ACRO II

The Extra Flugzeugbau EA 300/S is a renowned aerobatic aircraft designed by the German aeronautical engineer Walter Extra. The development of this aircraft can be traced back to the early 1980s when Extra, a former aerobatic pilot, recognized the need for a high-performance, reliable, and maneuverable aircraft specifically tailored for competitive aerobatics. The EA 300 series, including the EA 300/S variant, was a response to this demand, aiming to deliver superior aerobatic performance to pilots participating in competitions and air shows worldwide.

The EA 300/S is a single-seat version of the earlier two-seat EA 300 model, offering an upgraded structure for enhanced aerobatic capabilities. It was first introduced in the mid-1990s following the success of the initial EA 300, which had already established a solid reputation in the aerobatics community for its exceptional handling and performance. The 300/S variant is constructed using advanced composite materials, which provide a significant weight reduction without compromising structural integrity—vital for the high stresses experienced during aerobatic maneuvers.

Key Features and Capabilities

Under the hood, the Extra EA 300/S is equipped with a Lycoming AEIO-540 engine, delivering around 300 horsepower. This powerful engine, combined with the aircraft’s lightweight design, allows it to execute demanding aerobatic sequences with precision and agility. The aircraft is capable of sustaining high G-forces, both positive and negative, making it a favorite among top-level aerobatic pilots.

The niche of the EA 300/S lies primarily in competitive aerobatics. It has been widely used in aerobatic championships, air shows, and by training schools specializing in advanced aerobatic instruction. Its reputation for reliability, combined with impressive performance metrics, has made it one of the most respected aircraft in its class. The EA 300/S represents a perfect blend of engineering excellence and pilot-centric design, continuing to be a prominent choice for aerobatic enthusiasts and professionals alike.

Accident and Incident Reports

July 02, 2006 - Hertford, North Carolina

Damage Level
Substantial
Description
The pilot receiving instruction stated that he had recently purchased the airplane and was receiving instruction from the certified flight instructor (CFI) in the tail wheel airplane for insurance purposes. He and the CFI departed earlier in the morning and had conducted touch and go landings at three different airports to include the accident airport before they stopped to refuel the airplane. After refueling the airplane he and the CFI took off and flew back to the accident airport to do more touch and go landings. The pilot stated, "both my instructor and I were aware of the power lines." They entered the traffic pattern and the pilot made another touch and go landing. The pilot remained in closed traffic, turned final approach for the second touch and go landing, and the airplane collided with the power lines. The power lines separated, the airplane collided with the runway, and collapsed the main landing gear. When asked why the airplane collided with the power lines, the pilot stated, "we simply did not see them on this approach."
